eduroam online supplicant training is up and running

eduroam logo  Monday 19 January 2009, Cambridge, UK: GÉANT2’s knowledge transfer activity, in alliance with the mobility and roaming access activity and the eduroam service activity, is pleased to announce the release of the online, self-paced training for setting up eduroam supplicants. eduroam (EDUcation ROAMing) is the roaming infrastructure used by the international research and education community that provides the eduroam user experience: open your laptop and be online.  Being part of eduroam allows users to access a wireless network at a visited institution that is also connected to eduroam, simply using the same credentials the users would use if they were at their home institution (for instance, username and password).

The training walks users through setting up a variety of supplicants for eduroam (a supplicant is a software application installed on the end-user’s computer that is required to submit the user’s credentials to eduroam).  The training is aimed at anyone who has to configure supplicants for end-users.  It takes a maximum of 30 minutes to complete and can be paused and restarted as required.

The aims of the online training are to teach participants how to configure:

• The built-in Windows XP supplicant
• The Intel supplicant
• The SecureW2 supplicant

The training has been developed by DANTE and RESTENA.  DANTE is the organisation responsible for managing the pan-European GÉANT2 network, on behalf of Europe’s National Research and Education Networks (NRENs).  RESTENA is the National Research and Education Network of Luxembourg, and is a GÉANT2 partner.

Peter Webster, DANTE’s Training Manager, says, “NRENs may feel that it would be worthwhile to develop similar online training in their community’s local language.  I’m very happy to provide advice on how to do this, and any NREN who wants such advice should contact me via my email address: peter.webster@dante.org.uk.”

You can access the training from the eduroam.org website: http://www.eduroam.org/index.php?p=europe&s=training

For GÉANT2 intranet users, it can also be found at http://intranet.geant2.net/server/show/nav.2030

The training can also be accessed via the main GÉANT2 website at http://www.geant2.net/server/show/nav.2094
