Cuba Joins CLARA
On April 30th CLARA welcomed a new partner when the Cuban NREN RedUNIV officially joined the organisation.
RedUNIV connects over 10,000 computers in Cuba located in universities, health centres and research facilities. Various cultural centres are also connected, including the University of the Arts (CUBARTE). Currently the capacity of the national network is 8 Mps, but an upgrade to 20 Mbps is planned for later in the year.
RedUNIV was established in March 2005 and presently consists of 16 universities and four research centres. The creation of RedUNIV is evidence of the catalytic effect that the ALICE project has had on the region. Countries whose own research networks were less developed have been focusing efforts on improving their own resources, in order to benefit from the RedCLARA network. It is hoped that RedUNIV will connect to RedCLARA in the near-future.
