Community Collaboration Delivers Training Success

GEANT2 logo   new TERENA logo  The first GÉANT2/NA8 training workshop was held in the DFN (the German NREN) offices in Berlin on 30 May - 1 June 2007. The aim of the workshop was to train an initial group of potential trainers, and also to carry out important ‘beta testing’ of the training materials and course structure to obtain useful feedback about the course, which will deliver practical training in the perfSONAR suite of network monitoring tools.

Peter Webster, NA8 Training Manager (DANTE) said, “We are very pleased with the way the course went, and we gained some really useful feedback about the tools themselves. We’ll use this feedback to further develop and refine the course, and I look forward to rolling this training out to a wider audience in the very near future. The success of the course is thanks to solid collaboration between TERENA, DANTE and the participating NREN partners.”

The three-day course was designed to support the perfSONAR pilot programme, and it will equip participants with the knowledge and high quality course materials that they will need to cascade down user training about the installation and use of the perfSONAR suite.

The training Networking Activity 8 (known as NA8) of the GN2 project was conceived in September 2006 at the start of the project’s third year. After some time preparing the extensive training materials, workbooks and related presentations, it is now starting to deploy its first initiatives. NA8 will in particular provide training to NREN staff members in order to facilitate the transfer of specific areas of Joint Research Activities (JRA) in the GN2 project to real services. NA8 is provided through the collaboration of various project partners: DANTE is co-ordinating the training activity, TERENA takes care of organising the training workshops and several NRENs involved in the JRA contribute to the training materials and provide the trainers.
