Chief Operations Officer

Marian Garcia Vidondo

Marian Garcia VidondoMarian Garcia Vidondo finished her masters degree in Telecommunication
Engineering in 1999 at the Public University of Navarra (Spain)
specializing in optical communications. At the end of 1999 she moved to
England working as a Software Engineer at Techne Ltd (Duxford)
developing embedded software for electronic devices.

In April 2000 she became part of the Operations team at DANTE, working
on day-to-day operational issues. During this time Marian participated in different projects such as the 'GEANT-IPv6' project focused in the deployment of native IPv6 in the GEANT network. This project was considered a pioneering deployment of native IPv6 at a pan-European level.

Since January 2003 Marian became Operations Manager at DANTE and in July 2007 she was promoted to Chief Operations Officer. Marian is responsible for the operations of GEANT2, the Pan-European research network, providing IP services and point-to-point Ethernet connections to the National Research Networks in Europe. She is as well responsible for the operations of advanced multi-domain services in Europe such as the multi-domain monitoring service. Marian works together with other networks like Internet2 and Esnet in America in the
definition of the global operations for such services.

Emma Apted

Emma AptedEmma studied Physics with Computational Physics at the University of Kent in Canterbury, graduating with a BSc in 1992. She then joined the Customer Support team at EUNet GB supporting various ISP services where she was hostmaster for the DNS co.uk domain. The company became PSINet UK then PSINet Europe then Telstra Europe where she moved into Network Operations and Engineering. She specialised in OSPF and BGP routing, transit services, peering and RIPE LIR co-ordination and projects included PoP moves and Internet Exchange connection migrations. In her last year at Telstra she was also involved in the implementation of SDH and voice customer connections.

Emma joined DANTE Operations in November 2006 where she specialises in MPLS. Her interests include IP Routing and documentation. She also enjoys languages and speaks French (intermediate) and Italian (basic)

Xavier Martins-Rivas

Xavier Martins-RivasXavier Martins-Rivas completed his Master's degree in Computer Science at EFREI (France) in 2005 after two years in Paris and one year at Concordia University in Montreal (Canada). In july 2005 he started work as a Network Engineer in the GEANT2 NOC.

Xavier joined DANTE in May 2007 as a network engineer in the Operations Team.

Toby Rodwell

Toby RodwellToby Rodwell studied Electrical & Electronic Engineering at the University of Nottingham, gaining his BEng(Hons) in 1993. After graduating, Toby served in the Royal Navy, leaving in 2001 in order to pursue a career in IT and telecommunications. Having qualified as a Cisco Certified Network Professional, he joined Convergys EMEA Ltd, a company which develops billing software and manages customer support centres. Based in Cambridge, Toby was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the enterprise network, with particular responsibility for network monitoring, record keeping and asset management.

Toby joined DANTE in June 2003 as a network engineer in the operations team. His interests lie in network monitoring, security and routing, and he is the Operations point of contact for QoS issues.

Tim Streater

Tim StreaterAfter completing Physics and Computer Science courses at Imperial College in London, Tim went to CERN, which is located in Geneva, Switzerland. He was at CERN for 12 years working with early megabit networking projects and on-line systems. He later moved to Stanford Linear Accelerator Centre (SLAC) in California during the early 1980s, to a similar physics lab. At SLAC he pursued Ethernet deployment which at that stage was not as reliable and easy as it is today. Tim provided management software for people who were still using ASCII terminals connecting to hosts via a switch.

After 12 years at SLAC he joined DANTE Operations in 1993 as an Operations Engineer, where he is mainly responsible for reporting and the assets database.

Matthew Wright

Matthew WrightMatthew joined DANTE's Operations team in August 2006. Matthew graduated with a BEng(Hons) degree in Internet Engineering from the University of Essex in April 2006.

Matthew's interests include computing, networking and motorsport

Fausto Vetter

Fausto Vetter gained his Computing Information System Bachelor degree from UFSC Brazil (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina). During his graduation period, he became involved with network measurement and performance projects developed by the Brazilian National Research and Educational Network, also known as RNP (Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa). He subsequently worked on perfSONAR activities, being responsible for initiating the development of some measurement point services and  the management and visualization tools.

Fausto joined DANTE as part of the Service Desk team that has been established to deliver new multi-domain services to European NRENs.

Domenico Vicinanza

Domenico Vicinanza received his MSc and PhD degrees in Physics from University of Salerno (Italy) in 1998 and 2001. His PhD work involved computer simulation and database design of a LHC experiment detector at CERN. He worked for seven years as both a Research Associate at the University of Salerno and at Roma Tre, as Scientific Associate at CERN. His activities during this time included LCG sites administration, grid computing, services support and teaching.

He was also involved in the application of grid technologies for music and visual arts chairing the ASTRA (Ancient instrument Sound/Timbre Reconstruction Application) project for the reconstruction of musical instruments by means of computer models on GÉANT2 and EUMEDCONNECT.

Recently, Domenico worked in the Operations and Support section of IT department at CERN, working on the EUMEDGRID project that involved the service support for site administrators and the Service Availability Monitoring package documentation. He also participated in training activities.

Domenico joined DANTE Operations in January 2008, working in the Services Support team.

Domenico's interests include music, Argentine tango and visual arts.

Wayne Routly

Wayne Routly graduated from NMMU (South Africa) with a Masters degree in Information Technology in 2004 after finishing a Bachelors in Computer Science from the PE Technikon in 2003. He spent several years as the Information Security Officer/Security Engineer for the NMMU. In 2005 he joined Fabric Technologies based in London as an Infrastructure Engineer responsible for firewall and network services deployment and management.

Wayne joined DANTE in March 2008 as a security engineer for the operations team. His interests are information security, virtualisation and data integration.
