The backbone topology of the GÉANT2 network is illustrated by the map on the right. The core backbone in January 2007 consisted of a total of 39 routes, including 14 dark fibre routes; once roll-out is complete, the network will include a total of 44 routes, 18 of which will be dark fibre.

The Global Connectivity Map shows interconnections between the GÉANT2 network and some of its counterpart research and education networks around the world. There are currently 12 connections to other world regions, four of which are to North America and three to Japan. The Global Connectivity map also shows a number of other projects managed by DANTE that interconnect with GÉANT2.
